Federal Grant Audit Readiness & Compliance Support

Federal grant support for U.S. organizations

Federal award requirements vary by organization, program, award terms, and funding structure. Responsibilities may include tracking expenditures, documenting costs, maintaining procurement records, monitoring subrecipients, and reconciling reported amounts to accounting records.

Organize award records

Intellgus helps clients organize the financial information and supporting documentation relevant to their federal awards.

Preparation, not an audit opinion

We help management prepare and identify issues for follow-up. Final audit requirements and conclusions depend on applicable regulations, award terms, the organization's circumstances, and the independent auditor's work.

Process

What is a Single Audit?

A Single Audit is an audit under the federal Uniform Guidance in 2 CFR Part 200, Subpart F. It generally includes an audit of an eligible non-federal entity's financial statements and additional procedures addressing compliance requirements for selected major federal programs.

  1. 01

    Current threshold

    • For fiscal years beginning on or after October 1, 2024, the general threshold is $1 million or more in federal awards expended during the fiscal year.
    • For earlier fiscal years, the previous general threshold was $750,000.
  2. 02

    Who may need one

    • Organizations above the threshold generally need a Single Audit or, if they meet the applicable conditions, a program-specific audit.
    • Whether an audit is required—and which type is appropriate—depends on the organization's fiscal year, federal award expenditures, award structure, and applicable requirements.
  3. 03

    Reporting

    • The audit and related reporting package are subject to federal submission deadlines.

Federal grant auditreadiness services

Intellgus's role in an engagement will be defined in writing. Preparation and advisory services are distinct from an independent audit. Where an independent audit is required, the organization must engage a qualified, independent auditor.

This preparation support is not a substitute for the independent audit or the auditor's opinion.

Single Audit preparation

We help your organization prepare financial information and supporting records for review by its independent auditor. Preparation support may include organizing grant schedules, reconciling expenditures, compiling award documents, and coordinating responses to information requests.

SEFA preparation support

The Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards (SEFA) lists federal awards expended during the fiscal year and is an important part of the Single Audit process. We can help organize the information needed to prepare and reconcile the schedule. Final preparation responsibilities and review procedures should be agreed with your organization and its independent auditor.

Federal award financial reporting support

We help organize and reconcile financial information related to grant expenditures and reporting. Work may include grant-account reconciliation, supporting schedules, expenditure tracking, and comparisons between reported amounts and accounting records.

Cost documentation and allocation review

We help management review documentation and accounting processes for costs charged to federal awards. Depending on the engagement, this may include personnel expenses, shared costs, payroll allocations, invoices, receipts, and the organization's cost-allocation methodology. Our work can identify items that may need additional documentation or evaluation. Whether a particular cost is allowable depends on the applicable federal requirements and award terms.

Internal-control and process review

We can help management assess financial processes relevant to federal awards, such as expenditure approval, procurement documentation, grant reporting, reconciliations, and subrecipient monitoring. This work is intended to help identify process or documentation gaps. It does not replace an auditor's required internal-control work or constitute an audit opinion.

Prior audit finding support

We can help organize records related to previous audit findings and management's corrective actions. Support may include reviewing relevant accounting records, assembling documentation, and helping management document process changes. Whether a finding is resolved is determined under the applicable requirements and evidence—not by preparation support alone.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

It is preparation or advisory support to help an organization organize federal award records, reconcile financial information, and prepare for review. It is different from an independent Single Audit, which must be performed under applicable requirements by an appropriately qualified, independent auditor.

The general threshold is $1 million or more in federal awards expended during a fiscal year beginning on or after October 1, 2024. Fiscal years beginning before that date generally use the prior $750,000 threshold. Confirm the applicable requirement for your fiscal year and circumstances.

No. The requirement depends on federal awards expended during the fiscal year, the organization's circumstances, and applicable regulations. Some organizations may qualify for a program-specific audit instead, subject to the rules.

The Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards is a schedule of federal awards expended during the fiscal year. It is used in the Single Audit process and helps provide information about federal programs included in the audit.

Depending on your organization and awards, useful records may include the general ledger, trial balance, grant agreements, expenditure schedules, invoices, payroll documentation, cost-allocation support, procurement records, subrecipient records, financial statements, and prior audit reports.

This page describes preparation and advisory support, not an independent audit opinion. Confirm with Intellgus whether it or a separate qualified independent auditor will perform and issue any required audit report.
