Nonprofit Tax Preparation & Compliance Services

Nonprofit tax services for 501(c)(3) organizations

Tax-exempt status does not automatically eliminate every tax filing obligation. Many U.S. nonprofits must file an annual IRS information return or electronic notice, and some may also have unrelated business income, employment tax, or state and local tax responsibilities.

Organized records, structured process

Intellgus helps nonprofit leaders approach tax preparation with organized records and a structured process.

Requirements depend on your facts

The applicable filing requirement depends on the organization's classification, gross receipts, total assets, activities, and applicable IRS rules.

Our nonprofit taxpreparation services

Intellgus helps organizations organize financial information and prepare the appropriate return based on the organization's records and filing requirements.

This support helps management prepare for tax season. It does not replace legal, accounting, or tax advice where those services are needed.

Form 990 preparation

Form 990 is the annual information return used by many tax-exempt organizations to report financial activity, governance, programs, and compliance information. Organizations generally file Form 990 rather than Form 990-EZ when they have gross receipts of $200,000 or more, or total assets of $500,000 or more at the end of the tax year, subject to applicable exceptions. Form 990 is publicly available for many organizations, so accurate and complete reporting can affect how donors, grantmakers, and other stakeholders view your organization.

Form 990-EZ preparation

Certain eligible tax-exempt organizations may file Form 990-EZ instead of the full Form 990. In general, an organization may use Form 990-EZ if its gross receipts are below $200,000 and its total assets at year-end are below $500,000, subject to IRS exceptions and eligibility rules. Intellgus can help eligible nonprofits organize financial information and prepare the appropriate return.

Form 990-N electronic notice

Form 990-N, also called the e-Postcard, is an electronic notice for certain smaller tax-exempt organizations. Under current IRS instructions, organizations that normally have annual gross receipts of $50,000 or less generally must submit Form 990-N if they do not file Form 990 or Form 990-EZ, subject to exceptions. Although Form 990-N is brief, eligibility and timely submission still matter. We can help eligible organizations understand the information needed for the filing process.

Private foundation tax returns: Form 990-PF

Private foundations have distinct federal reporting and compliance requirements. Intellgus provides tax preparation support for eligible private foundations that need to report financial activity, grants, charitable distributions, investments, and other required information. Private foundations may have requirements beyond those applicable to public charities, so their filing needs should be evaluated separately.

Unrelated business income tax: Form 990-T

A tax-exempt organization may have unrelated business taxable income from certain activities not substantially related to its exempt purpose. An exempt organization that has $1,000 or more of gross income from an unrelated business generally must file Form 990-T, subject to the applicable facts and exceptions. Not every revenue-generating activity creates unrelated business taxable income. The conclusion depends on the activity, applicable exceptions, and relevant tax rules.

Nonprofit tax compliance review

Nonprofits may have reporting obligations beyond the annual information return. We help organizations organize financial information and identify tax-related matters that may need additional review.

Multi-state nonprofit tax support

Nonprofits operating in multiple states may encounter different registration, reporting, and tax requirements. Depending on the organization's activities and locations, these may include state income or franchise tax rules, charitable solicitation registration, sales and use taxes, or other obligations. Intellgus can help organize the financial information relevant to these requirements and support applicable tax preparation engagements. The specific obligations depend on the organization's activities and the laws of each relevant state.

Why nonprofit tax compliance matters

Nonprofits depend on public trust, donor confidence, grant funding, and sound financial management. Accurate filings and organized documentation support all three.

  1. 01

    Trust & tax-exempt status

    • Protect tax-exempt status: Organizations required to file an annual return or notice generally lose federal tax-exempt status automatically if they fail to file for three consecutive years.
    • Maintain donor confidence: Donors and grantmakers may review publicly available Form 990 information when assessing transparency and stewardship.
  2. 02

    Annual filing requirements

    • Meet annual filing requirements: Depending on size, classification, and activities, a nonprofit may need to file Form 990, 990-EZ, 990-N, 990-PF, Form 990-T, or another applicable return.
  3. 03

    Tax obligations & records

    • Identify potential tax obligations: Tax-exempt status does not automatically eliminate unrelated business income tax, employment taxes, or every state and local tax.
    • Improve financial documentation: Organized accounting records make tax preparation, reviewer questions, and future filings easier to manage.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The applicable filing depends on the organization's classification, size, and circumstances. Many tax-exempt organizations file Form 990, 990-EZ, or 990-N, while certain organizations—including many churches and qualifying church-affiliated organizations—may be excepted from the annual information return requirement. Confirm your obligation using current IRS guidance.

Form 990 is the standard annual information return used by many tax-exempt organizations. Form 990-EZ is a shorter return generally available to eligible organizations with gross receipts below $200,000 and total assets below $500,000 at year-end, subject to IRS exceptions.

Form 990-N, or the e-Postcard, is an electronic notice generally required for smaller tax-exempt organizations that normally have annual gross receipts of $50,000 or less and do not file Form 990 or 990-EZ, subject to exceptions.

Yes. A tax-exempt organization may owe tax on unrelated business taxable income and may also have employment tax or other tax obligations. An organization with $1,000 or more of gross income from an unrelated business generally must file Form 990-T.

Organizations required to file an annual return or notice generally lose federal tax-exempt status automatically if they fail to file for three consecutive years. Reinstatement may be possible through applicable IRS procedures, but the process and consequences depend on the circumstances.

No. Tax-exempt status does not automatically eliminate every federal, state, or local tax obligation. Depending on its activities, an organization may still have employment tax, unrelated business income tax, sales or use tax, or other applicable requirements.
